We hope this FAQ resource about rekey locks is helpful for you.

What Does Rekeying a Lock Mean?
Rekeying a lock means changing the pin combination in the lock mechanism so that the old keys will no longer work with this lock. By taking the lock apart and replacing some of the internal tumblers or key pins, we set a new key code inside the lock to match a new key. Now only the new key will open the lock.
Is It Cheaper to Rekey or Replace Locks?
Rekeying is almost always cheaper than replacing your locks. When you rekey a lock, you’re paying for key pins, which are extremely low priced. However, when replacing a lock, you’re paying for brand new parts.
How Much Does It Cost to Lock Rekey?
Our service callout fee and the first lock rekey price is $110.
For additional lock rekeys:
- Single sided locks (key lockable from one side only) are $35 each
- Double sided locks (key lockable from both inside and outside) are $45 each
- Gainsborough trilocks are $55 each
How Long Does Rekeying a Lock Take?
Our professional locksmith takes about 15 minutes to rekey a lock. After rekeying, we will cut new keys for the lock. We can do this on-site because our mobile vans have the right tools and materials.
When Should You Rekey Your Locks?
We recommend that you rekey your locks when:
- You move into a new property. Rekeying will ensure that the previous keys will no longer work.
- You lose your keys.
- You have given out keys to your family, friends, neighbours or service providers, but they have not returned them.
- After your home or business got broken into.
- You have damaged locks or keys.
- You want to use the same key for all locks in your home or office.
- There is a change of occupants. Break up with a partner or a housemate moves out.
Can You Rekey Any Key to Any Lock?
Yes, if the keyholes are the same or the locks are of the same brand. You can check by inserting one of your keys into other locks. If the key can slide in, you can rekey that lock to use the same key.
